Why this sunrise is a logistical problem
Haleakalā means "House of the Sun," and the NPS treats sunrise at the 10,023 foot summit like the main event it is. Since February 2017, entering Haleakalā National Park between 3:00 AM and 7:00 AM requires a sunrise reservation: $1 per vehicle, released 60 days ahead, routinely gone within 15 minutes. Park entry itself is another $30 per vehicle, good for three days. Then there is the drive: 38 miles of climbing switchbacks from sea level to the summit in the dark, with summit temperatures around 40 to 60°F that can dip below freezing before dawn.
A tour solves all of it at once. The operator holds the commercial permit, so no 60 day reservation scramble. Someone else drives the dark switchbacks while you doze. And the reputable companies bring the blankets, the hot drinks, and the breakfast you will want badly after two hours above the clouds.
Three permitted companies run the classic sunrise circuit, per Maui activity specialist Adventure in Hawaii, and the differences come down to group size, breakfast, and how they treat you at 35°F. Here is how they shake out on Viator, plus the sunrise plus bike combo that adventure travelers keep booking.

Polynesian Adventure Tours
Around $254 per person, the most reviewed Haleakala sunrise tour on Viator at about 2,450 reviews and a 4.7 rating. Hotel pickup in a Premier Mini Coach, the 9,740 foot climb to the visitor center, park admission, and breakfast at Cafe O'Lei at the Plantation in Waikapu. Founded on Oahu in 1977, running Maui since 1987, so the operation is about as seasoned as they come. Families take note: their child rate undercuts the other two operators by a wide margin.

$264 per adult, 4.8 across about 700 reviews, and the group caps at 22 instead of a full coach. The 8 hour day starts around 2:00 AM with South and West side hotel pickup, and the summit kit is the best in the business: hooded fleece volcano blankets for everyone and an oxygen generator on board for the altitude. Breakfast is a proper sit down at the Maui Tropical Plantation with three plated options, macadamia nut pancakes included.

Around $287 per person, 4.7 across about 170 reviews, and the only pick here that leads with ecology rather than logistics. Reviewers name guides like Corey and Eddie for the natural history commentary, and the drive up includes a stargazing stop to watch the Milky Way before dawn. Breakfast is included and the day ends in Paia. Viator's own Haleakalā National Park page ranks it alongside Valley Isle as one of the two best sunrise tours running.

$279 per adult, 4.4 across about 268 reviews, and the classic Maui twofer: sunrise at the 10,023 foot summit, then 26 miles of mostly downhill biking from the 6,500 foot park boundary to the seaside town of Paia. The 7 hour day meets at 2:45 AM at their Paia office, groups cap at 12, and the operator has run this route for over 30 years. Restrictions are real: 15 and up, at least 5 feet tall, 280 pound weight limit, moderate fitness.

Operator notes
Polynesian Adventure Tours is the volume leader for a reason beyond the review count. The company has run Hawaii tours since 1977 and its Maui operation since 1987, and reviewers consistently name guides like Alfredo and Preston for the island history narration on the climb. The tour climbs to the 9,740 foot visitor center area for the sunrise itself, then descends for breakfast at Cafe O'Lei at the Plantation. One caveat from the fine print: West side pickup is restricted in Lahaina, so confirm your pickup point when you book, and Airbnbs and private residences are not on the pickup schedule.
Valley Isle Excursions wins the comfort question. The 2:00 AM start sounds brutal, but reviewers say the guides get you to the summit early enough to claim the prime viewing spots, and the fleece blankets genuinely change the experience at 40°F. The company picks up at South and West side hotels, and cruise passengers note the separate shore excursion version with Kahului port pickup. Their cultural storytelling gets called out in reviews as often as the sunrise does.
Haleakala EcoTours is the pick if you want the morning to feel like a natural history field trip. The "classic vehicle" in the product name is the van; the classic part is the format, sunrise, park tour, and breakfast, done with an ecology-first guide team. Reviews skew toward travelers who cared about the commentary as much as the colors.
Mountain Riders is the only way to earn your breakfast. The 26 mile descent is over 99 percent downhill, the van shadows the group, and the ride now doubles the switchbacks above treeline since Maui County stopped allowing bike traffic through the Kula residential stretch. Note the trade: you meet at their Paia office at 2:45 AM, so you need your own ride there, and breakfast is on your own in Makawao or Paia afterward.
One more name worth knowing: Skyline Hawaii, the zipline company, runs its own Classic Haleakalā Sunrise Tour with hotel pickup, warm gear, and breakfast at Cafe O'Lei, plus a sunrise plus zipline combo on Hawaii's only pendulum line. Their guides train 80 hours, twice the industry standard per the company's Tripadvisor page, and the company donates to local conservation per booking. They book direct rather than through Viator, which is why they sit outside the comparison above.
Know before you go
Book the sunrise for early in your trip. The 2:00 to 3:00 AM wakeup is miserable on day one and merely bad on day three, and the travel guides all make the same point: use your mainland jet lag while you have it. If you scuba dive during the trip, wait at least 72 hours before heading to the summit, per the standard operator briefing. Elderly travelers, pregnant women, young children, and anyone with respiratory or heart conditions should check with a doctor first, which every operator repeats because the altitude is real.
Dress for winter, not Hawaii. An insulated jacket, hat, gloves, long pants, and closed toe shoes are the baseline; reviewers who brought a blanket or poncho on top of the operator's gear report being the comfortable ones. Sunrise runs about 5:50 to 6:40 AM depending on the month, and the summit lots fill, so the operators' habit of arriving 40 to 60 minutes early is a feature, not padding. After the sun is up, the crater floor glows, the silverswords catch the light, and Mark Twain's 1866 line about the most sublime spectacle he ever witnessed starts to feel less like hyperbole.
Where this fits in your Maui week
Haleakala sunrise is one of Maui's two classic full day experiences. The other is the Road to Hana, and our comparison of the best Road to Hana tour companies runs the same four way format. The perfect 7 day Hawaii itinerary puts sunrise and Hana on separate days with a slow beach day between them. Do the sunrise first in the week: the earlier you go, the more your body clock cooperates.
