Why Keauhou vs Honokohau matters
Kona has two main manta feeding sites. Manta Village sits off Keauhou Bay in the south — the boat ride is 10–15 minutes, which is why Sea Paradise's trip is so short and sweet. Manta Heaven sits off the airport/Honokohau area in the north. Operators choose the site based on nightly conditions, and mantas feed at both. The practical difference for you: pick the departure harbor closer to where you're staying. Staying in Keauhou or south Kona? Go south. Staying in Waikoloa or Kohala? Go north and skip the night drive.

Two departures a night, 45 minutes in the water, hot chocolate after. The tradeoff is the crowd: you'll share the light boards with a lot of people.
Kona Snorkel Trips is the small-group answer — 18 guests on the vessel Orca out of Honokohau Harbor, with a private dock (no crowded boat ramp shuffle). Every crew member is lifeguard-certified and the boat has propeller guards. It costs more than Sea Paradise, but reviewers consistently call out the personal attention.
Liquid Hawaii runs 8–10 person tours from Kohala — the anti-cattle-boat option. Multiple reviewers call it the best of several manta tours they've done, specifically because you're in the water fast with a crew that knows individual mantas by name.
The honest section: when mantas don't show
Roughly one night in ten, the mantas simply don't come. Plankton blooms shift, and no operator controls that. What separates good operators from great ones is the re-ride policy: Sea Paradise rebooks you on another night free. Others offer partial credits or discounted re-rides. Ask before you pay — and book your manta night early in the trip so a rebook night actually exists.
